An exploration of Sigma’s innovative new full-frame zoom lens and its prime-like optical performance.
Sigma has just announced a revolutionary new zoom lens, the world’s first full-frame zoom with a constant f/1.8 aperture throughout its entire range.
This is a game-changer for videographers who can now enjoy the versatility of a zoom lens while achieving the sharpness and clarity typically reserved for high-quality prime lenses. It enables more seamless run-and-gun shooting without frequent lens changes.
Let’s delve into the new Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art lens and see how its sharpness and versatility can enhance your videography and photography.
Introducing the Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art Lens
As a spiritual successor to Sigma’s popular 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens for APS-C cameras, this new 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art Lens showcases breakthrough technology, achieving an unprecedented constant f/1.8 aperture in a zoom lens.
The 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art Lens is the world’s first zoom lens for full-frame mirrorless cameras with a constant f/1.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range. It offers prime-like optical performance, a video-friendly design, and a wide-to-normal focal range, making it a lighter option without compromising image quality.
The lens comprises 18 elements in 15 groups, including three aspherical and five Special Low Dispersion elements to minimize flare and ghosting and suppress various aberrations. This ensures an optical performance that matches or surpasses other Sigma Art lenses, including prime lenses.
Sigma designed the 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art Lens with video production in mind. Its bright f/1.8 aperture and wide-to-normal zoom range make it a versatile tool, perfect for single-shooters and run-and-gun setups.
The internal zoom design maintains the lens’s overall length during use, making it easy to balance on various gimbal setups. This design also suppresses focus breathing, ensuring smooth movement across the focal range. Sigma’s high-speed, high-response linear actuator autofocus is both quiet and accurate, while manual focusing is enhanced with click-and-lock mechanisms
